Unit 23 task 1

Unit 23 Task 1

UFC 196 – Live event

UFC 196 is a live sporting event, the producers cover the event by placing cameras in certain areas to capture the best shots of the action. An example of one of the shots used during UFC 196 is a wide shot, this shot was used to capture the crowd as well as the octagon. The producer also used a close-up, the purpose of this shot was to cover the fighter while they are walking into the octagon. Another shot used by the producer was a close up of the fighters getting checked up by their teams during a break after a round. They also used a camera on a crane to get a high angle shot of the octagon and the crowd.

Maintaining viewers interest

The producers in charge of UFC 196 maintain interest by having video packages throughout the night to hype up the main event. They also showed the competitors entering the arena as well there preparation before the fight. This is engages the audience by building up anticipation for the match which means the viewer is more interested in seeing the programme.

Another way they maintained viewer’s interest is when they cut between Conor McGregor making his entrance to Nate Diaz waiting in the octagon. This was done to capture the differing emotions between the two fighters, while one fighter was calm and relaxed the other was tense and focused. By showing the different reactions this maintained interest

The common structure for a UFC event would be the fighters entering the octagon, they would then have their MMA records and where they are fighting from announced. Then the referee would go through the rules with the fighters, after the fight the fighters are interviewed by one of the commentator. After each of the rounds there are replays to show the main highlights of each round. They have a graphic at the bottom of the screen which shows which shows the names of the fighters. There is also a timer which shows how long is left to the end of the round. This helps maintain viewer’s interest by allowing someone who has just tuned into the programme to know what stage the programme is at.

They would also maintain interest by cutting to different shots to capture the best part of the action which would peak the viewer’s interest. An example of this is when the fighters move towards the fencing, the previous shot was far from the action so the operator cut to a high angle shot which was closer to the action.

This screenshot shows a pre-recorded vignette of the fighter’s telling their story about how they got this stage of their career. This helped maintain viewer interest by allowing the audience to get an in depth look into the fighters, meaning they are more emotionally invested in the fighter. This means they are more likely to continue to view the programme to see the outcome.

Visual Style

The visual style of UFC is reflects what the programme is about. The colour scheme of black and gold links to the programme, the black links to the octagon and the gold links to the championship.

When Conor McGregor was making an entrance the lighting changed to colours of the Republic Of Ireland, this linked to what Conor McGregor was wearing as the screenshot below shows. The security walk down the fighters this is done to legitimize the branding of the programme, which is that the competitors are the most dangerous men in the world. The meaning behind this is not for the security to protect the fighters from the fans, but rather the fans from the fighters. The referee and the officials wear all black to distinguish themselves from the fighters. This allows them to fade in the background while making the fighters stand out more. The fighters are wearing trunks and gloves, this links to the programme as it is a mixed martial arts events and this clothing is a common feature.

The octagon is located in the centre of the arena while the audience are seated around it .The fighters make their entrance through a path in the arena, there is the spotlight which focuses on the fighters while they walk in. This links to the programme as the programme pushes the fighters as the main attraction.

One of the camera shot they used was a mid-shot they used this frequently so that they were able to get all the fighters body. They would also get a shot of the crowd, this was done to capture the reaction of the people in attendance. They used this shot as the reaction from the crowd would influence how the people watching at home would react.

This shot was taken by a camera on crane, the shot is show an alternative angle of Connor McGregor making his entrance. It also shows the spotlight following McGregor. The second photo shows a shot of the crowd this shot was taken to get the crowd reaction. This screenshot shows Nate Diaz making his entrance. The camera shot is a close up, by a handheld camera this was done to capture the fighter’s emotion coming in to the octagon.

One constraint for filming UFC is that the cameras cannot film inside the octagon which means they have to stand on the outside. This means that they have to film on the outside, this restricts their movement as they only have a small space to move about the area. Also the cameraman have to stand in an elevated position to avoid the fencing getting in the way.

The Jeremy Kyle Show

The Jeremy Kyle Show – Studio

The Jeremy Kyle show is a daytime chat show where the host Jeremy Kyle invites guest who have dilemmas and tries to help them find a solution.

There is a common structure to each episode, there is a guest who has a dilemma and the host Jeremy Kyle tries his best to solve it. An example of this was a guest suspecting their partner was cheating and made them do a lie detector, Jeremy would speak to her first before calling out her partner to get his side of the story and they would then get the results of the lie detector and deal with the reaction from it.

They have five cameras which follow the action there are two handheld cameras, one camera backstage this camera is used to show a guest waiting in the backstage area, one camera which captures the audience’s reaction and one camera behind the set.

They would also have a handheld camera follow the host when he went to the backstage area, this made people at home feel like they were actually there at the forefront of the action. They also used an over the shoulder shot while the guest was talking this was done to make it appear as if the guest was speaking directly to the people at home. The screenshot to the right shows a cut to the audience, this shot is used to communicate meaning to viewers as if the audience and the host have a shocked reaction it would mean they would react like that.

At the start of the programme clips of shown of what is going to happen throughout. This is also done before a commercial break, this is an effective way to maintain viewer’s interest as it intrigues the viewer making them want to continue to watch the programme. The programme changes the guest with different dilemmas, this maintains viewer’s interest by making the programme not feel repetitive.

The screenshot to the right shows an extreme close up, the purpose of this shot is to show the facial expressions. The screenshot below it shows mid shot the purpose of this shot is to capture the body language, as well as the movements and gestures.

  1. Merit - you have highlighted some key points with use of some examples (which need to be more specific- e.g. Shot types, mise en scene, movement, etc). This needs further explaining using subject terminology
